Abstract:
The unique electronic properties of graphene have attracted a huge amount of attention since its discovery in 2004. The structural properties of such a two-dimensional lattice are less known but not less exceptional. Graphene has a rippled structure at any finite temperature, negative lattice expansion, size dependent elastic constants, has a peculiar phonon spectrum and melts in a very unusual way. In the last years, many other layered materials have been identified which can be exfoliated to form single or few-layer systems and can be combined to form what have been called van der Waals heterostructures. In this talk I will discuss several intriguing structural aspects of graphene, alone and in combination with other materials.
Resume:
Annalisa Fasolino is professor of computational condensed matter at the Radboud University (Nijmegen, the Netherlands). After the studies in physics in Italy, she has been postdoc at the Max Planck FKF in Stuttgart, assistent professor at the SISSA Trieste and associate professor at the University of Modena until 1996. Her main topics of research are the structural and electronic properties of heterostructures and nanostructures, carbon materials and graphene, and nanoscale friction. She has published more than 180 peer-reviewed journal articles. She participates to several national and european actions to promote gender balance in physics.
