题 目: Designing the Morphology of Separated Phases in Multicomponent Liquid Mixtures

摘 要:
Phase separation of multicomponent liquid mixtures plays an integral part in many processes ranging from industry to cell biology. While the physics of binary and ternary liquid mixtures is well-understood, the thermodynamic properties of N-component mixtures with N>3 remains relatively unexplored. This makes it challenging to understand how cells control concentrations of molecules and their interactions to navigate phase diagrams to achieve target structures. To address this issue, we developed novel algorithms for constructing phase diagrams and for predicting the morphology of separated phases. To determine the number of coexisting phases and their compositions, we developed a new algorithm for constructing complete phase diagrams, based on numerical convexification of the discretized free energy landscape. Furthermore, we developed a graph theory approach to predict the topology of coexisting phases from a given set of surface energies (forward problem), enumerate all topologically distinct morphologies, and reverse engineer conditions for surface energies that produce the target morphology (inverse problem). The effect of an elastic network on the phase behavior of the mixture will also be discussed.

毛晟,北京大学工学院力学与工程科学学院助理教授、特聘研究员。毛晟于2011年获得北京大学理论与应用力学专业学士学位,2016年于宾夕法尼亚大学机械工程与应用力学系获得博士学位,研究方向为挠曲电材料的力电耦合行为;后于普林斯顿大学从事博士后研究工作,研究方向为软物质(尤其是多组分软物质)系统的复杂力学与物理学行为。
